The Things I Am Obsessed With

When I was little I was very willing to try new things. People were always impressed when I wasn’t afraid to try a new dish at a restaurant or when I would eat something off my dad’s plate that other people did not commonly like. This willingness followed me everywhere and I wasn’t afraid to show it off. Before fourth grade, I had already tried out seven different sports (basketball, dance, gymnastics, tennis, swimming, softball, and golf) and multiple different hairstyles. I never was really obsessed with anything. So when I say I have no idea where my current-day obsessions came from, I mean it.

To this day I have been through multiple stages of my obsessions. For example, last year I was obsessed with having the cleanest shoes I could, sushi, and organizing my family’s silverware drawer. As crazy as these sounds, it is the truth. My obsession with having clean shoes still stands but has died down to a healthier level. Last year it took me a solid 7 months to wear the shoes I received for Christmas because I was afraid they would get ruined. I have since then worn them and they are no longer solid white but they are good enough for me.

Even though this year has only consisted of almost three weeks I have found myself already building more obsessions. You can be the judge whether these obsessions are healthy or not but I would like to know if you have had obsessions similar to the things I am obsessed with.

We will start off with my main obsession as of right now. This obsession has to deal with something that I eat. And this is a cereal from Trader Joe’s called, “Vanilla Almond Clusters”. Something about this cereal just makes it so much better to eat than all other cereals.  If you were to ask me approximately two and a half weeks ago about my opinion on cereal, I would have told you in a very direct way that I would choose to eat my vegetables any day over any type of cereal. Now though, I would say that there is one exception and that is the “Vanilla Almond Clusters” cereal. If I could describe this cereal to all of you in just a couple of words I would say that this cereal has a perfect mix of textures and taste along with the ability to taste the same whether it is getting soggy in milk or you are just eating it straight out of the box. I could eat this cereal at any point in the day and never get tired of it (as of now).

Another one of my food obsessions I have gained since the holidays is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. But not just any Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. It has to be Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Shapes. Have you ever seen the Christmas Reese’s that are shaped into trees or the Holloween Reese’s shaped into pumpkins? Well if you have not I suggest that you start looking for the next shaped Reese’s. I have come to the conclusion that Reese’s shapes are better than the normal Reese’s. This is because I feel as though the normal Reese’s are overpowered by the waxy chocolate outside. Also, personally, I like peanut butter better than chocolate.

One of my more recent obsessions has been to have my drawers in my room organized. Over winter break, I took it upon myself to clean out my clothes. While doing this I realized that I actually have a lot more room in my drawers than I thought I did but I was never able to notice. This was because for so long I had just tossed clothes into my drawers which overall just created chaos. So even since then, I fold and re-fold my clothes to make sure my clothes are put away in an orderly fashion. If something is out of place I will take the time to adjust it until it is neatly put away. I do this not only because things look more organized but also because I strongly dislike wearing wrinkled clothes.

Something else that has grown on me in the past couple of months that has now become an obsession might be a gross one to some of you. But I have become obsessed with helping my dogs get rid of their eye boogers. I do this by grabbing a tissue and just swiping the boogers off of them. This all started when I saw other dogs who have boogers stuck in their fur. I then realized this was because it is practically impossible for dogs to get rid of their own eye boogers. So I figured I would help them out, and I haven’t been able to stop because I feel too bad for them.

Overall, I would say that I don’t have too many weird obsessions and for the most part they make sense. But I would love to know about all of your obsessions! Have you all had some weird ones? Have you had ones that have stuck for a while or ones that only last for a month? Please let me know in the comments!

  1. Hi Abby,
I enjoyed your blog post, and I actually wrote something similar this week in my own. Trader Joe’s is good, but a bit too expensive for my tastes. I would recommend vanilla-banana almond milk from Almond Breeze, as it sounds like a similar taste to the cereal you like. In regards to organization, I can definitely reciprocate your obsession. All of my friends know that I am a pretty organized person, at least when it comes to cleanliness. For example, my room is spotless and I don’t have to clean it (aside from sweeping, vacuuming, etc). I don’t throw clothes on the floor, my dresser is neatly, consistently organized, and my desk has nothing on it when I am not doing work. Living an organized life reduces the stressors of seeing clutter, and that is why I think it’s so addictive. It seems that you have gained a sweet tooth, while you say that you used to prefer vegetables, now you enjoy Reese’s and cereal. If you want a healthy snack that would satisfy your sweet tooth, I would suggest the trail mix from Costco. It includes an assortment of nuts and M&Ms. I don’t know if it’s that healthy, but whatever. You should not feel guilty about your obsessions, as they are just a reflection of who you are as a person. An obsession of mine is classical music. Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed your blog.

  2. Hey Abby! I love how you have tried out many different things in life, including sports, hairstyles, and food. I can definitely relate to that, and also find it interesting to think about where current obsessions come from. One of the things that stood out to me was organizing your family’s silverware drawer. Did you have a specific method to your organization? I would love to know because my family could definitely use that. It does not surprise me when something from Trader Joe’s is one of your new obsessions. Personally, I have tried this cereal as well, and it is one of my favorites. The Reese’s cups shapes definitely have more peanut butter! So good. I’m wondering if you have begun to fold your clothes like Marie Kondo, where it is more of a roll. I have tried that and it works pretty well. I literally laughed out loud when I read about cleaning your dog’s eye boogers, I literally do that too because it looks like they feel so much better afterwards! Personally, one of my recent obsessions is crunchy green grapes and O-Ke-Doke Spicy Popcorn. That popcorn is the best spiced popcorn of all time and I 10/10 recommend it if your into spicy stuff. I think I will go purchase the vanilla cereal after school today, I hope to read about any future obsession in future posts!

  3. Hi Abby! I love your blog posts, and I relate to it a lot! Especially when I was younger, I would go through strong phases, whether it be towards a certain food, drink or activity. There was a period in time where I would come home from school every day and eat a pan-fried grilled cheese (emphasis on pan-fried). Although I no longer do this on a daily basis, I still enjoy one once in a while. As weird it sounds, I can relate to your obsession with clean shoes! A lot of times, I do not want to wear a new piece of clothing or start using a new product because I don’t want to mess it up and I am afraid they will get ruined-a phenomena similar to your white shoes! Also, I totally agree with you in saying that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are SO GOOD! I’ve never had the shapes so I will definitely have to give them a try, but I think the original ones are pretty good too. I will also have to try the vanilla almond clusters from Trader Joe’s! They sound amazing, and I feel like you have good taste! Thank you for sharing about your obsessions!

  4. What’s up Homan! I am so excited I am finally able to read your blogs after not being able to see them first semester! I first just wanted to mention that I think it was great you tried all the different activities as a child. I think this definitely allowed you to find what you truly loved to do, that being basketball (and dance, obviously). In regard to the Vanilla Almond Clusters, I think that the fact that it can taste the same in milk and straight out of the box is a super important for rating cereal. It may sound like a joke, but if the taste of a cereal gets gross in the milk, it’s a no go for me. Now moving on to the Reese’s. I know you already know where I stand on this candy in general because I hate peanut butter, but I can see why the shapes are so much better. I feel like the regular Reese’s have too much chocolate surrounding them, where the shapes look like it gets the perfect ratio of chocolate to peanut butter. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could make your own Reese’s shapes? I feel like that would bring so much business to the brand (maybe we need to give them a call)!
