Do you ever feel as though you can not keep all your group chats organized? Well actually, that’s not what I am here to help you with. Personally, my messages within iMessage are never organized. And my group chat names certainly do not help me with this. So instead I choose to go back and laugh at all old group chats. I have been a part of many weirdly named group chats in my lifespan of almost 18 years. And yet, no matter how weird these group chats may be, there are still so many cherished memories just the title of the group chat brings back. So for my enjoyment and also for yours, I would like to share some of these quirky names.
Starting with the most normal I would like to compare my AAU basketball group chats from just this year alone. This year my AAU team had two separate group chats going. The first group chat created for this year is named “3SSB”. I know what you are thinking, BORING! 3SSB in simple terms stands for 3 Strips Select Basketball, which is the title given to AAU teams sponsored by Adidas. My coach, being the creator of this group chat, really put no thought into giving it a creative name. So, my team took matters into our own hands. Obviously, we needed to create a group chat without my coach in it so it gave us an excuse to come up with a new original name for just the player group chat. The new group chat was given the grand title of “Baddies”. Isn’t this sick? It is simple yet so majestic. Also, may I add, it summed up our team goal into one word. The team goal, of course, was to win, but it was also not to back down to teams that were bigger and stronger than us. And to do this we had to be a group full of baddies.
Another one of the more normal group chat names was “My Best Friends” not to be confused with the group chat “BFFS” which had the same people within it. I know, it’s confusing, right? The group chat “My Best Friends” was my junior year school basketball group chat. This group chat included all the players on it. During that basketball season, the team became very close so the name overall fit the team aspect. In ways, we were all best friends on the court and off the court. Many other coaches had even asked my coach how our team specifically gets too close. So honestly the group chat name fit the group well. But this same season, my team had another group chat which included the managers titled “BFFS”. Yes, I know there are easy ways to differentiate between the two group chats but come on. We all know that BFF stands for best friends forever, so you can see where the confusion is stemmed from. Having the same people on two different group chats named around the same concept became so confusing. I always forgot which one included our managers and which one didn’t. I would advise you (if you are ever in the same situation I was) to come up with two completely different group chat names.
So here is where it gets weird. I have a group chat with my closest friends from middle school, and let me tell you, a lot goes down in that group chat. This group chat was created circa 2019 and it still is up and running today. But before I tell you the name of this group chat, let me explain myself. Before this name was given the group chat had no name, but when Covid hit and there weren’t many things to do, a name was given. During the first weeks of quarantine, it was brought to my attention by my friend Maddy that the health raves were to drink a gallon of water every day and to follow along with Chloe Ting’s workouts. So since my friends and I were bored we decided to give it a try. But it didn’t last long. Soon we found these health remedies to be something completely useless to us, so we decided to make fun of our friend Maddy. This is all where the group chat name stemmed from. It was ultimately given the name “Maddy’s Gallon Ting Ting”. And it has remained that way ever since.
Here is where things start to take a turn for the worse. Starting with my freshman year school basketball group chat. The name of this group chat is “bigbigbigswag”. Anytime someone mentions this group chat so many random stories pop into my mind. That year I would not say we carried much swag. Although it was a successful season, when we walked into gyms we wore gray tracksuits that were either way too small or way too big that also contained many random rips. So although we weren’t very swaggy, the group chat itself was.
Another random group chat name I have been a part of is “Cowboys and Octopuses” and, in that same year, “Fritos”. Both of these group chats were for the same team (my sophomore year school basketball team) but “Cowboys and Octopuses” was our Snapchat group chat name and “Fritos” was the IMessage group chat name. There is simply no relevance between cowboys or octopuses and my team didn’t even like to eat Fritos but they were both fun names at the time. Like these group chat names, this basketball season was a bit messed up. This season we only played 13 games and there was no state tournament. So I guess the group chat fit the mood.
I have learned over the years that sometimes even the smallest details such as group chat names can bring back the best memories. I can not wait to see what new and creative group chat’s I will be a part of in the future.
Very creative blog post idea! I love when blog posts make me want to go and do something for myself, such as go look at my old groupchat names. Personally for me, when a groupchat that I’m in can’t think of a good name for the chat, we resort to just combining the first letters of our names to form one word. I know it’s uncreative but it’s oftentimes the best things we can think of. The groupchat that has my immediate family in it is called “family” and the one with my entire family is called “big family”- two more very creative group names. Finally, for my seventh period french class: “7th period blended french four”. I hope maybe these names give you some ideas for the future. On a different note, I hope sometime soon you write more about basketball, maybe a fun story or like describing some aspect of it not many people know about. I’ve noticed that in the many years we’ve been friends, the only person who can talk about sports and still keep my interest and understanding is you. That may be because you expllain it really well or just that, like we can see from your blog post, you and any team you’ve played on have had such a great friendship so your love for it shows in your storytelling.
