Finding the Perfect Roommate

Wrapping up college season I expected it to be smooth sailing, which for the most part, it has been: second semester senior year, smaller workload, and more free time. Planning to attend college in California, comes with its benefits (nice weather, good food, etc) however, it also means entering a new environment with completely new people. Looking towards the next 4 years of my life, I am excited for the new learning opportunities, and undoubtedly the so-called ‘college experience’. However, I do have concerns; one in particular – a roommate.

Just as anticipation and excitement about the next 4 years of college are at an all-time high, the feat of finding a roommate begins. Weighing the options between singles, doubles, and all types of suites I have determined that living in a single is not the ideal choice and might be worse than going random (paired up with another random next year). As of now, I have set my mind on finding one person to room with; even if we end up with other randoms in a suite.

Scrolling endlessly through class of 28 Instagram pages and reaching out to friends in California, I have yet to reach out to anyone. Truthfully, I just keep delaying. I am partly waiting for my post on the 28’ page to go up, but also waiting to attend an in-person event in the hope of finding someone in person rather than taking a stab through social media – perhaps it is a stigma around sliding into peoples’ DMs even if it is just for a roommate. Nevertheless, I have created a mental checklist/criteria:

  • Business School

Many of my friends in college have recommended that I room within my major. I guess it is also almost an ‘unspoken requirement’ that we can help one another as well as have a similar schedule & workload. Although some may contradict saying it becomes a competition, I would rather compete than fail. Furthermore, I can only assume it keeps both of us in check and responsible for attending class and finishing assignments; unless we’re both irresponsible. Furthermore, rooming within my major, especially business, automatically creates a connection to leverage and chances are our personalities align.

  • Neat

Arguably number 1, I think myself to be a neat person and easily get annoyed when others around me are not. I am not OCD or a perfectionist but I like to think there are standards to a dorm being habitable. Both within the room and with hygiene, I believe being neat to be a very important factor. Although we are entering college, the hygiene part should not be a concern; right?

  • Similar Balance (Academics/Fun)

Entering college I understand that academics are important, BUT so is having fun. Although I do not know if I will rush or not, I plan to enjoy my time in college, and not solely in a library. However the opposite is also true: someone who always goes out, might negatively influence my ability to correctly balance my school work and social life.

  • Sports, Music, Personality

A given. Someone who I would want to be friends with rather than forced to be close as roommates. This is what the class of 28’ bios are primarily for. Discovering a similar personality and potential people who you would click with. I too created a bio(yet to be posted) as attached below:

hey everyone! my name is bryce and i’m from naperville, il (near chicago). berkeley is my top choice and i plan on majoring in business at haas this upcoming fall. i enjoy traveling, exploring new food, skiing, and listening to music (benson boone, bruno mars, the weekend, brent faiyaz, bryson tiller, don toliver).

Admittedly it is pretty basic, especially after scrolling through hundreds of other bios.

  • Sleep Schedule

I do not really have a sleep schedule, as some days I am in bed by 8:30 pm while other days I am up until 1 am. However, I would like a roommate who will just let me sleep, whether it be my random naps or irregular sleep schedule.

Reflecting upon my list, maybe my requirements are too specific. It makes me think that to fulfill everything on my list I need a single. But still, I look on in hopes of finding the perfect roommate.
