Justice League: The Snyder Cut was truly a marvelous movie with amazing cinematography, a stunning plot and most of all significantly better than its original variant. In just the first 10 minutes we get a remarkable scene replayed from Batman vs Superman in which superman is dying. It’s filmed differently with a new angle and perspective. It gave the movie some continuity from the last DC movie, which was refreshing to see considering DC lacks the same movie continuity that marvel has been so renowned for. In the very beginning, we get introduced to a different villain named Darkseid. He was way scarier than Steppenwolf from the original film and gave DC a more overarching villain similar to how the Avengers had Thanos now the DC heroes had Darkseid to defeat and unlike Steppenwolf his impact is undoubtedly going to stretch across multiple films, not just one or two. The first impression I had of the cinematography other than the odd aspect ratio is how much more gory, scary and impactful the scenes are. It definitely makes the original Justice League look like a child’s movie and a lot of the hardcore fans enjoy this dark tone that movies like this bring.
Batman plays a very integral role throughout the film both being the leader of the Justice League and having to grapple with Superman’s death serves as a major obstacle. Unlike previous Batman movies, we can see how he’s able to balance both the light and dark sides of himself now that he’s significantly older and wiser. He also grapples with Superman’s death and blamed himself for letting Superman die which is why he attempts to bring him back so aggressively. Justice League also introduces us to new characters like The Flash and Cyborg.
The Flash is your classic nerdy guy who doesn’t really have a purpose until Batman comes to recruit him. His overly positive personality makes him an easy recruit for Batman and joins the superhero band really quickly to make some friends. I think his portrayal in this movie was done pretty well because he uses that overjoyed personality to cover up for his dark past and hide a lot of his true emotions which Snyder did a good job of representing. The Cyborg on the other hand is the complete opposite as he’s struggling to deal with this new life being half human. At first, Cyborg resents the other heroes and was unwilling to join Batman and the others on their crusade but that soon changes as he finds out he needs a purpose in life and his father dying gives him that motivational kick to get some old fashion revenge. I feel like Cyborg could have been done a little better and his character arc really could have been developed a bit deeper. Cyborg is one of my favorite characters and it would be nice to see him get some more screen time in important movies like Justice league. Although Aquaman also makes an appearance in this movie struggling with being both the king of Atlantis and his human side it’s not really an integral part of this movie in my opinion but a lot of his character is flushed out in the Aquaman movie so it’s fine.
Although we really only got some very brief character development with each of these new heroes it would be great to see that spiral into individual moves for both of them. I feel like one of the biggest problems for this movie was the fact that it went from 100-0 really quickly and built up multiple different plot lines for future movies and introduced so many different characters all at once. DC should really take a page out of marvels book and build up plots more steadily and tease big movies over multiple different films, this will not only improve their sales dramatically but also it would make the continuity of the DC timeline actually make some more sense instead of it being in this fragmented state like it is now. Getting superman back was a huge plot point of the movie because he’s the only chance at saving earth but in order to do that they need to use an unknown alien technology named the mother box. While Batman loves to dabble in the unknown and stretch the limits of science, Wonder Woman disagrees with his philosophy and refuses to take part in this dangerous endeavor.
Superman’s revival was done pretty well I think because although he comes back soulless we see Batman’s ingenuity when he’s able to use Superman’s human side to bring him back which was cool to see. The ending fight scene was probably the best superhero fight scene I’ve ever seen and it was so cool to see not only all the heroes fighting together but Superman’s entrance into the battle was epic, to say the least. In the original movie, The Flash pushes a small truck during this battle but now in the Snyder cut he actually serves a purpose when the heroes fail to stop the mother box on time he uses his ability to time travel to go back and change what happened. This one scene brings up so many new fan theories about multiple dimensions and timelines and Snyder really nailed the movie with this one scene.
In conclusion, the Snyder cut was truly an amazing piece of work and significantly better than the original. I would definitely give this 4-hour-long movie a watch if you’re a fan of some old-school DC action.
I am more of a Marvel fan since they actually know how to make movies as opposed to Warner Brothers who have ruined the DC franchise. They have the best superheroes and don’t know how to use them at all while Marvel is making irrelevant heroes popular by giving them television shows and movies. I was not a fan of the Justice League movie since there was no build up to it with the heroes like there was for the Avengers. They didn’t even have a full team since there are supposed to be seven members instead of six. They never introduced Green Lantern and still have not shown him apart from their failed movie. The Snyder Cut version of this movie is better but it is still not that good overall since DC can’t expand upon it in any meaningful way. The actors have had several issues with working on these movies and some have had other issues which have delayed the movies for a long time as well. I wasn’t a fan of the length of the movie either since four hours is just really long. I hope that DC can put together a good film franchise within my lifetime so that I can enjoy Batman and Superman like I did with Marvel.
I think we can all agree that the Snyder Cut was a lot better than the original Justice League movie. Though, you make some valid points about how some of the flaws that the Snyder Cut had kind of made it feel like there was a lack of a lot of stuff. I know you talked about how there is no Green Lantern and how Warner Brothers isn’t the best at planning movies long-term like how Marvel is, but I wanted to add a little bit to that as well. I feel like they also left out Shazam and Black Adam, and if Warner Brothers had planned it better, Shazam and Black Adam could’ve come out before Justice League so then they could’ve actually been in the Justice League film as well. I just think that they made the Justice League film too early because at that point the only well-established character in the franchise was Superman (Affleck Batman doesn’t count in my opinion) and even then the hype around Superman had started to run dry by the time Justice League got released just because of the big gap in time. To me, it felt like Justice League just popped out of nowhere and I don’t remember feeling any hype at all when it got released. In comparison, I recall the legendary build-up for Avenger’s Endgame, which was absolutely phenomenal in my opinion. I think Marvel trumps DC any day.
