Everyone loves to watch television and movies because the stories are great. There are also people who love to watch television and movies because the books that they are made from are also excellent to read. There is much to be said about TV and movie adaptations however. More often than not there is something different about what we’re watching when we compare it to what we remember reading. Writers will often change the work of an author on the set of a show or movie for various reasons. There are often changes made for the better but people will have much to say for years to come when shows and movies don’t live up to the hype. I’d say that movies and television shows will never be able to truly live up to the work they are based off of.

I am sure you’ve all seen popular television shows based on a book but the one best known for it is the Game of Thrones show. The books had been out for over a decade before the show first started filming and when they finished the show the books were still not completely released. We are stuck with what is the last two seasons of GOT where no one was satisfied with any facet of the season. This is what I mean when I say that shows and movies do not do well when they stray from the source material. Authors are some of the most inventive and creative people on the planet and they usually do not have a role in the adaptations of their work. In the event that an author does control the way their writings are portrayed, they do rather well. I am sure you have heard of Harry Potter and the something more than once by now. J.K. Rowling took charge of the process when the movies for her books were released and look at her now. She is the richest author alive and the Harry Potter franchise has made billions of dollars. Percy Jackson had two movies where Rick Riordan was not involved in the movie making process and the movies turned out to be awful. That shows you what the author’s influence can impact in works of art.

I think that this topic is interesting only because it will divide people’s opinions on shows, movies, and books that they like. An argument between two fans is entertainment to be enjoyed when you are bored. I also am grateful that shows and movies based on books exist at all because I would not have my favorite shows to keep me company at all while I’m still here. I like that my imagination will be given a sense of reality once I am finally able to watch. Lots of people cannot imagine and picture characters the way they would like and movies make that issue very simple. When you read a book you can interpret the plot and the story to your liking. Books allow your mind to be creative. Furthermore, books are much more detailed than films. Usually a film lasts a couple of hours while in a book there can be pages of description where a scene is taking place.
Hi Mustafa, I think your argument that movies and television will never live up to their source material is a good one, but I have to disagree. I know plenty of shows that surpass their source material in quality and entertainment. An example is the Hunger Games movie. In my opinion, the movie far outshines the book in every way. Part of this conclusion may come from my bias against books, but I still believe that shows can surpass their source material. However, I like how you brought up examples of shows that declined in quality and entertainment after straying from their original source material. I do agree with you that the last two seasons of Game of Thrones were hot garbage and disgraceful to the original books.
