ill :|

Over the past four months, I have gotten sick on three separate occasions. Honestly, I find this pretty impressive, like, I haven’t heard of anyone around me doing this much so I guess I’m just built different or something. Anyway, here’s how I would rate the last three times I’ve been sick!

October 23 to October 27: ???

This era was a bit suspicious, like, I could not tell you what illness this was. I definitely blocked it out from my memory but I vaguely remember being in pain. I thought it was bad at the time but had no idea what was about to occur in the coming weeks. I would rate this sickness a 4/10 since it was pretty uneventful in itself and occurred at an emotional time in my life, making me even more sad.

November 12 to November 18: Covid-19 x Flu Crossover Event

I started to feel some concerning symptoms while doing cardio conditioning for gymnastics. We were running laps up and down the stairs when I started to think to myself about how the distinct feeling of pain in my legs felt similar to when I got Covid the previous year (which I caught from going out once in the span of two weeks to Home Depot). Instead of taking this as a sign that something was up, I thought I was absolutely bulking my legs and straight up gaining. This adrenaline rush caused me to run even faster with a crazy high amount of energy. I didn’t feel much initially. I got home and laid down on my couch, feeling okay until I realized that I was unable to get up. My legs felt extremely weak and I could not support my weight. The immediate care doctors told me I probably had Covid or the flu, which I understood, but getting the little pdf uploaded on MyChart saying I was positive for both was incredibly shocking. I really didn’t think I could achieve that much if I’m being honest. I was so frustrated because a) I was in so much pain and b) I was literally going to get my second Covid booster that week.

It was fine, though. I was taking medicine frequently and my parents were serving me meals in bed because I obviously could not leave my room. Eventually, I decided to check my temperature and resting heart rate, which was 103.5 degrees Fahrenheit and 120 bpm, respectively. These numbers freaked my parents, doctor, and I out, causing me to get admitted into the ER. Thankfully, nothing else was wrong with me and it was just the Covid and flu!

I would rate this sickness a 9/10 because she really came for the drama and gave it her all. Getting both illnesses at the same time kind of felt like the Hannah Montana x Suite Life on Deck x Wizards of Waverly Place Disney Channel crossover episode. The timing was pretty convenient, as well, and I somehow didn’t fall too far behind in school. Unfortunately, she did lose a point for being a bit too painful but other than that she served.

January 12 to January 19: Cute RSV Moment

This sickness was more irritating than anything. I fully thought I had a cute, casual cold for like four days until it just got so much worse. I feel like I rushed through this illness because once I stopped being contagious I just started going to gymnastics again and competing like nothing happened. I just had my Senior Night earlier tonight and, although there were multiple instances where I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I got some pretty high scores. I would rate this illness a 2/10 because it was just an inconvenience that was painful.

In conclusion, my message to everyone is to stay safe and make sure you’re prioritizing your health over anything else. Hopefully, once winter is over I’ll stop getting sick every month but I guess we’ll just have to see!

  1. Hey Ria, I am so sorry you have gotten sick so much:(( It is good though that you are looking on it at the bright side, you are for real setting records of getting sick so much. I feel like so many people have gotten sick this year, including myself which sucks. I totally get what you mean about getting sick but not knowing what you have. It is good at least that October 23- October 27 wasn’t awful. Oh no, I am so sorry you got the flu and covid at the same time…I can’t imagine that. I get what you mean about pushing through cardio in gymnastics, as you felt you were getting stronger by the second but really it was just numbness to your legs. I am happy you didn’t pass out, and rested when you got home. After you rested, was it hard for you to fall asleep? Getting covid and the flu at the same time is honestly an insane thing, I can not lie. I am glad that you got rested and spent time watching a classic Hannah montana x wizards of waverly x suite life on deck. Those were genuinely some of the best tv shows to exist, I can not lie. I am so sorry you got sick again,i but I am happy you are feeling better. Hopefully when the sun comes out you will feel less sick:)

  2. Hi Ria!! First of all, girl. You were not allowed to eat dirt as a child. I hope your immune system is taking a break on fighting those viruses more recently and that you are getting better. Ria, I love the way you write. Reading your blogs every week sounds so much like you’re just telling a story – there’s no huge words, you don’t write with crazy wording or super run-on sentences. It just feels like I’m looking into your brain and I like that. Also I don’t know how I always forget you’re in gymnastics, my brain just doesn’t associate the two of you together. I think that now that all the photos of the seniors are up in the gym, I can associate it better? But I have to walk all the way through the gym every day (oh my gosh so original!! No one else has ever done that!!) and I walk past your photo. Anyways. So slay and girlboss of you for ranking all of your sicknesses 1 through 10, and for referencing some old time Hannah Montanna and Wizards of Waverly place and Suite Life (which I wasn’t allowed to watch as a child?? And I feel like I missed out on so much). Thank you for sharing Ria and I hope you stay healthy!!

  3. Hi Ria! I’m so sorry you’ve had so many severe encounters with viruses recently! With all of the stress of school and sport piled on top of a sick body, I think you’re so so strong for sticking through it so well. I witnessed a bit of the end of your last run-in with RSV. I have so much respect for you for pushing through and showing up to everything despite viruses seeking to make your life hell. I was actually so shocked to read about your Covid-Flu crossover because I can’t imagine how scary it must have been to have tried to get up but to have your legs crumble beneath you. Your Covid-flu hybrid truly did bring the drama by raising your vitals so high. I’m glad that it was just your virus cocktail making your body go crazy.

I think I might have caught your October sickness too. I feel like 4 people got sick after the Halloween party we both went to, so it’s possible that your virus wanted to continue slaying the day even though you felt recovered.

This past semester has been totally exhausting, and unfortunately, it seems like it manifested in literally every single aspect of your life. I hope that all of the sicknesses you had strengthened your immune system enough that you just never get sick again. Seriously. I can’t imagine being so sick so often. I’m so glad that you’ve recovered, and hopefully, everything feels much better from now on!!

  4. Hi Ria! I also got sick a bunch of times last semester but it was in no way as bad as yours. I was always so surprised when you got sick because I was always like “again?” because the joy of watching you trying to park in the morning was no longer there for the duration you were out :(. I know earlier today you were telling me about how there’s no way you’ll get sick a fourth time right? Right? I really hope you don’t. Getting sick sucks and you’re a champ for getting through all of that. You’re always pretty optimistic but reading those texts of you saying your really high temp or bpm was really concerning. I feel a little bad but it was kind of funny when everyone was sick after the Halloween party but I got my karma a week later anyway.
I’m glad you were able to power through your sicknesses! I hope you won’t get severely sick again, especially with all the events we need to participate in. I hope there won’t be a fourth time where you’re out of a couple of days and when the weather’s warmer I know you won’t get sick again!

  5. Hey Ria! I’m so sorry that you’ve been sick so often this semester. I feel like every single time I get sick I always attempt to cope by eating copious amounts of cough drops to soothe my throat because for some reason that’s usually the first sign of sickness for me. Your November 12-18th sick period sounds absolutely horrible but I’m glad that you’re so much better. Honestly I think that you are so much stronger than I am because I definitely would have taken a bunch of Advil to get through those. I do recommend taking daily vitamin c because I feel like ever since I’ve taken them I’ve gotten less and less sick lately. I did notice that you were missing for a few days last semester but I’m not sure if that was the sickness or if it was something else. Hopefully this semester is better for you and you don’t get sick as often or as bad as your November 12-18th sickness because that just seemed like absolute torture. I know there were a bunch of people in my friend group that got sick recently so hopefully it was just our group and not the entire school so it doesn’t get to you.
