Spotify Wrapped Did Me Dirty

In celebration of our last blog of the semester and Spotify Wrapped coming out on Wednesday, I wanted to take a second and really dive into my very questionable music tastes this past year.

First of all, in case you didn’t already know, I absolutely love listening to music. I always have it playing in the background or through my headphones to keep me company, and it serves as (in my opinion) a very valid excuse for not hearing someone yell my name across the hallways.

Other than labeling me as an “angsty sad boi” (yes with an “i” instead of a “y” I swear it isn’t a spelling mistake), and essentially telling me that I listened to sad music too much, I think this year’s wrapped was honestly the highlight of my extremely long week.

This year, my music addiction has summed up to a whopping total of 82,320 minutes of listening. I’m honestly not too sure if that’s good or bad, but I do know that it’s a number that I want to surpass for next year’s wrapped. A good chunk of those minutes were definitely while I was dying in the library trying to complete my college apps and the rest were probably made up by second semester last year, which was pretty rough. Spotify really knows how to make me feel special because it told me that it was more than 97% of other listeners in the United States, but I feel like that’s pretty questionable.

If you haven’t read my blog on The Neighbourhood in My Neighborhood (shameless self-promo), I ranked all of my favourite Neighbourhood songs and talked about why I liked them so much. This year, Spotify told me that my top song was Single by The Neighbourhood, with a total of 609 listens. I truly don’t know why I had such an affinity to that song this past year or what happened on January 11th but I will admit that it’s a masterpiece and everyone should listen to it at least once.

Going off of that, the rest of my top songs this year consisted of C U Girl by Steve Lacy in second place, Sex, Drugs, Etc. by Beach Weather in third, Talk by Hozier in fourth, and Mind Games by Sickick in fifth. I feel like this was definitely a pretty accurate representation of my favourites, all of which are pure art.

The only band I like more than The Neighbourhood is Chase Atlantic. I’ve spent 7,954 minutes listening to them and placed myself in their top 0.1% of listeners, but unfortunately I am still not satisfied. Last year I was somehow able to place myself in their top 0.01% of listeners, so I definitely downgraded but I will make it my goal to claim my spot back next year.

Funnily enough, Spotify decided to call all of us onions as if we were Shrek and told us that we had lots of layers. In some type of effort to make a knockoff MBTI for music personalities, I was labeled as an early adopter and apparently have the music personality of ENVC, which supposedly stands for Exploration, Newness, Variety, and Commonality. I’ll place an image of it so that you can get more information if you’re curious, but honestly it’s nothing all that fascinating.

In order to validate my ENVC status, I guess I have been able to branch out into newer genres this year, one of them being Drift Phonk/Phonk in general. To be fully honest, I’m not sure how I even got into Phonk, but for being mostly just instrumental it’s actually a pretty good genre with a plethora of good songs, even though some of them do sound the same. In case you didn’t know what phonk was, Google says that it’s a subgenre of hip hop and trap music that was inspired by 1990s Memphis rap. I feel like that definition definitely throws me off a little bit but I also don’t have a better way to define it. With Drift Phonk sitting at third in my top genres this year, I wouldn’t say that I’m a professional at all things Phonk, but I will say that I listen to it enough to be able to recommend a few songs.

Although I absolutely do not appreciate Spotify doing me dirty and telling me that I am an angsty sad boi (I will never get over that), I’m quite satisfied with this year’s wrapped. I know college next year is definitely going to bring my listening time up so hopefully I can rid myself of my angsty status and swap it out for something better.

  1. Jessica,
May I just say that when I saw you wrote about your Spotify wrapped, I immediately clicked on the post. Seeing other people’s Spotify-wrapped is one of my favorite things about social media. The only thing I really want to talk about from this post is your third most listened-to genre, Phonk. Previous to your post, I had never even heard of this genre. So, I of course had to search for it in Apple Music and give it a listen. I did recognize Drift Phonk from Spotify. This does not make the song any less spectacular. Listening to this had gotten me the most hype I had been in a very long time with my heart racing and eyes darting around as they were. I can tell why this song is called Drift Phonk. I now want to get into a particularly cool sports car and drift around a lot, of course with this playing in the background. I love how all of the songs in this genre have to start with “Phonk (something)”. For example, on the album Phonk Drift V2, some of my favorite songs are Phonk Drift, Phonk Sunset, Phonk Mafia, and Phonk City. I am very glad I read your blog post otherwise I would have never been able to listen to this genre of music.

  2. Hi Jessica!

Every year, the Spotify Wrapped comes out, and every year, I am disappointed. I think I know which artists and songs will appear on my Wrapped, but Spotify really enjoys taunting me with artists and songs I haven’t listened to in months. For example, this year, my top artist was Drake (quite unfortunately), and while I listened to a good deal of his music earlier in the year, I don’t think I listened to him enough to justify his nomination as the artist of my entire year.

According to Spotify, my “listening personality” was the Adventurer – I value exploration, newness, variety, and uniqueness, so we were pretty similar in that regard. I think that this was a rare point of accuracy for Spotify, as I did indeed spend a lot of my 2022 searching for new artists and genres – I discovered I’m really into funk and house music this year.

Like you, I also like listening to Phonk (for some reason, I find it helps me get hyped to do homework). Although most of my Phonk exploration came from the Spotify playlist aptly titled “PHONK”, I’m hoping to get more into it this next year. To that end, let me know if you have any song recommendations – any genre!

  3. Hey Jessica! The title of your blog immediately caught my attention because I too feel like I am a victim of Spotify Wrapped. There was a song I listened to exclusively in January and February nonstop and never returned to again, and it ended up as my #1 song. Worst of all, it was a song I would play on repeat whenever I was sad, so this was kind of a slap in the face since I forgot all about it. I’m apparently an onion too, so I guess life can’t be that bad when you’re a vegetable. I also listened to a lot of music this year, and I agree that as we go to college next year, our number of minutes of listening will probably be a lot higher. I feel like when I get to college, I’ll probably have my earbuds in more times than not. For the record, I think your top artists all make great music and Spotify really did you dirty with the “angst sad boi”, but it’s better to be an angsty sad boi than someone boring. I haven’t listened to some of the songs you mentioned in your post, so I’ll try checking them out!

  4. Hi Shao! I remember when Spotify Wrapped first came out and we watched each other’s in the lit center. I still want to know why they went with a space theme and just randomly compared us to an onion. I know I made fun of your wrapped but honestly mine wasn’t any better. At least my music wasn’t labelled as “Angst Sad Boi Energy”. I do enjoy looking at Spotify Wrappeds the same way it’s kind of fun stalking people’s profiles. I personally avoided phonk because it never really came up in my recommended nor did anyone tell me. There actually was this one time but then I hit a curb listening to it so I don’t like it. I find it funny how you’re an “ENVC” because from what I’ve seen on the friend activity it seems to be the same stuff </3. UNFORTUNATLY, I couldn’t really enjoy my wrapped because of my listening to Rex Orange County songs. Quite upsetting. I thought it was hilarious you were able to guess a good chunk of my wrapped. I don’t know how you did it but good job!
Next year during college, I for sure will also be living in my earbuds to cope. Great job on your blog!
