Food, self-talk, giving gratitude, and social interactions are a few aspects that determine one’s physical and mental well-being. How one approaches handling their mental and physical needs can be otherwise known as self-care. Personally, I believe that since the beginning of the pandemic, mental health and self-care have been hot topics within society.

Despite what environment one may be in: school, after-school activities, or watching the news, there has always been talk about mental health. I believe that the increase in awareness to this subject has benefitted society and unstigmatized an illness that affects many. Whether one believes it or not, mental illness continues to play a great effect on the people around us and our community. Shockingly, one in 5 Americans battle a mental illness. This may be someone in your family, your neighbor, your teacher, or even yourself. Therefore, it is important to educate yourself on different types of mental illnesses, and what support one may need. Enough being said, mental illness is not a black and white topic. There are many different types of mental illnesses and degrees to which a person may be dealing with. For example, many people argue that they have anxiety when they present in front of a class. While this may be true, this individual may not have an anxiety disorder such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) their body may just react in a height of fleight situation when publically speaking. Or, they may feel anxious when speaking in front of large crowds but not small crowds. However, just because they feel anxious during certain situations ,does not conclude that they have a type of anxiety disorder. Also, there are degrees in how severe a person’s mental illness may be. While this person may not be technically diagnosed for an Anxiety Disorder, like social anxiety, they may still battle with this disorder on a smaller degree while being undiagnosed. Overall, it is important to understand that mental illnesses are not a straightforward topic, and there are different aspects that determine the severity of the illness.
Personally, growing up with a mother who is a Child Psychiatrist has been a huge blessing for me. As someone who has battled with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and ADHD since a young age, her understanding of my needs and validation of my struggles is the reason why I keep pushing through. After some discussions with some of my friends, I understand that some of their parents don’t believe in mental health and often times, see it as “lazy”. I have seen some of my friends severely struggling with a mental health disorder such as depression or an Eating disorder, but when they inform their parents of what they are currently dealing with, their parents often believe that they are being dramatic and therapy won’t be beneficial. Seeing some of my friends at their lowest point when battling their mental illness, and proceeding to hear their parents reject the idea of treatment, deeply hurts me. I understand my mother is likely apart of the smaller population in her generation that believes in destigmatizing mental illness and the process of receiving treatment. I am happy that Gen Z and millennials are continuing to be vocal when destigmatizing mental illnesses, something that is not very popular among many baby boomers. Even if one may not have access to therapy or professional help, they can still practice self care.

There are many different ways that self-care can benefit a person’s wellbeing. Self care can differ from person to person, as everyone has different needs. For some people self care may be eating a full meal or taking a shower, something some people may consider apart of their daily routine. But for others, self care can be socializing with friends, journaling, or going on a walk. Either way, one should incorporate a type of self care throughout their routine, as they deserve to feel good about themselves. Sometimes when my anxiety is very high and I begin to catastrophize, I journal. I journal how I feel, what I can do to make things better, and reminisce on similair situations where life may be difficult in the moment but gets better. Another self care tactic I use is baking. The process of making the dough/mix and then waiting for the treat to be ready reminds me that everything is a process. Even if I feel I am taking longer on something than I should be, I know I am on the right track. Everything will work out, just like it always has.
Next, let’s talk about something you can’t go wrong with: the fruit strips. These fruit strips come in multiple different flavors, are always perfect to satisfy your sweet tooth, but are healthier than eating typical candy. Speaking of candy, if you have not tried the Scandinavian swimmers, you have not lived your life to the fullest. The sour Scandinavian swimmers are even better in my opinion though. To describe the Scandinavian swimmers I would say they are like Swedish fish, but significantly better. They aren’t as hard as Swedish fish and come in way more different flavors and varieties. Also, the Scandinavian swimmers are made with healthier ingredients such as fruit and vegetable juice. I rate the fruit strips a 9/10 as I could eat one every day honestly and not get tired of them. Also, I rate the Scandinavian swimmers a 9/10 as they are super good and addicting but i just don’t always feel the best after eating candy.
